A visit to the Doctor cost money which meant that poorer people only visited the Doctor for very serious symptoms and often tried to teat themselves by following family remedies. Many pills and powders were offered in the local chemists and by mail order from adverts in local and national newspapers. The below extract is from a 1901 newspaper that offers a variety of cures for purchase by mail order.
