Home remedies for illness

A visit to the Doctor had to be paid for and even the purchase of pills from the chemists cost money which meant that most people tried home remedies most of which were bases on some degree of fact although sadly many were ineffective.

A few of the home remedies are reproduced below

To cure a stye on the eye where the stye has not come to a head

Put the smallest quantity of tea possible over a half a teaspoon of black tea and allow it to steep. In 10 minutes fold the wet tea leaves into a thin piece of muslin. Lay this on the eyelid and keep the eye shut for 30 minutes.

To aid digestion

Cayenne pepper helps aid digestion if used sparingly as it tends to draw blood to the stomach where it is needed to help digestion of food.

For a burn or scald

Apply the white of an egg. Not only is this soothing but it will aid healing.

To remove a fishbone from the throat

If when eating fish a bone should stick in the throat, a raw egg should be swallowed immediately. Do not drink water as it is perfectly useless.

For a cough

Take one ounce of castor oil and mix with one penny worth of syrup of mulberries. Give one teaspoonful twice daily until the cold or breathing is better.

Five ways to cure a cold

  1. Bathe the feet in hot water and drink a pint of lemonade. Then sponge with salt water and remain in a warm room.
  2. Bathe the face in very hot water every five minutes for one hour
  3. Snuff hot salt water up the nostrils every three hours
  4. Inhale ammonia of menthol
  5. Take four hours active exercise in the open air

To prevent discoloured bruises

To prevent a bruise from becoming discoloured apply water as hot as can be borne comfortably, changing the cloth as it gets cool. If hot water is not to be had at home then moisten some dry starch with water and cover the bruised part with it.

Two ways to prevent bed sores

  1. Beat the white of an egg to a stiff froth, apply to the tender parts with a piece of cotton wool or soft rag. Shake a little starch powder over to prevent sticking.

  2. Turn the patient on their side and rub the shoulder blades, spine, hips and elbows gently with methylated spirits.

Dandruff

Into a pint of white drop a piece of quicklime the size of a walnut. Leaver overnight and separate water from sediment. Add 1/4 pint of vinegar and wash the head with the mixture.

Baldness

Rub the part of the head with no hair frequently with raw onions.

Boils

Prepare a poultice with  camomile flowers to bring to ripeness. When the boil is ready to break lance with a sharp needle.

Port wine and sea bathing are also recommended for boils.

Pitting in small pox

Three treatments are suggested for the permanent skin pitting arising from small pox, measles, scarlatina, chicken pox etc

  1. Smearing the whole body once the eruption is fairly out with bacon fat; and the simplest way of employing it is to boil thoroughly a small piece of bacon with the skin on and when the joint is cold cut the skin off with the fat adhering. Score the fat crosswise with a knife and then run gently over the body once, twice or three times a day depending on the need.
  2. Dr Allshorn of Edinburgh mixes three parts of oil with one part of white wax over heat. whilst warm the fluid is painted over the body with a camel hair brush. As the mix cools it forms a mask that effectively excludes the air and prevents pitting.
  3. If light is admitted to the patients room via yellow blinds so that the red and blue rays of the sun are excluded pitting will be prevented.

 Remove Freckles

Take one ounce of lemon juice,a quarter of a drachm of powdered borax and half a drachm of sugar. Mix and leave to stand for several days in a glass bottle then run on hands and rub the freckles
