put 6 slices of stale bread into a moderate oven and bake until crisp

crush the toast into crumbs

butter a pie dish and thickly line it with breadcrumbs

peel and cut up apples

put a layer of apples onto the breadcrumbs

sprinkle with brown sugar

sprinkle with a spice either cinnamon, nutmeg or ginger - the choice of flavour lies with the cook

repeat layers of breadcrumbs, apple and spice until the dish is full leaving the top layer as bread crumbs

put a few small knobs of butter on the top and bake in a moderate oven for about an hour or until the apples are cooked
