Essex Ballads - Charles Edwin Benham

Charles Edwin Benham was born in 1860

He was a gifted writer, artist and scientest as well as a long standing editor of the Essex County Standard which was one of the best known local newspapers in Essex.

He wrote a number of books although his best known book was Essex Ballads which was a poetry collection written in Essex Dialect inspired by his contact with the people living in the rural parts of North East and Eastern Essex. The book was published in 1895 and became a best seller well beyond the Essex area that inspired it.

Sadly Charles Benham died in the offices of the Essex Countryside in 1929 but we are still able to enjoy his work in the Essex Ballads.
