Bed's were very different to those enjoyed in current times.
Although traditionally most beds were wooden framed by Victorial times iron bedsteads were the norm as they were felt to be strong and long lasting with the additional benefit that they did not harbour dirt of vermin.
A straw filled palliasse ( a thin mattress) was placed upon the bedstead.
A mattress stuffed with wool or hair was placed on top of the palliasse.
A blanket with then laid on top of the mattress.
The next layer was two sheets, one above and one below the sleeping person.
For warmth two more blankets were added.
At the head of the bed a bolster was laid across the width of the bed with a pillow stuffed with feathers laid on top of the bolster.
Poor people would sleep on a palliasse on the floor or on a raised wooden frame.
Wealthy people was have a mattress stuffed with feathers rather than hair or wool and may have brass instead of iron on the exposed section of the frame.
