Food for babies, infants and small children

 

 

 

Milk for babies

take one tablespoon full of cow's milk and mix with two tablespoons of hot water and sweeten with loaf sugar.

This quantity is sufficient for once feeding a new born infant. Give every two or three hours until the mothers milk offers natural nourishment.

Milk for infants

take one pint of milk and one pint of water.

Gradually add one tablespoonful of flour that has been dissolved in half a teacup of water.

Boil for 20 minutes. and serve.

As the child grows older less water is required until the mix is 2/3 milk and 1/3 water.

Meat

Mutton and poultry are the best meats for children. These meats should be slowly cooked and served with no gravy.

Under no circumstances give a child hard, tough or half cooked meats of any kind.

Vegetables

Potatoes should only be served when finely mashed and mixed with a little milk.

Peas should only be served when fresh and then seasoned with salt and mint which will take of the flatulency.

The addition of turmeric or currie powder to vegetables is good.

Winter

Blackberry and other fruit jams and currants are suggested when fresh fruit is not in season.

 

 

Fruit

fruits is good for children. It is important that all fruit is ripe as many deaths are caused by eating fruit our of season.

Apples should only be picked in the morning. If picked late in the evening they can prove injurious.

The old saying apples are gold in the morning, silver at noon and lead at night indicates this danger.

Fruit is best served stewed or cooked in pies although sliced fruit sprinkled with sugar is recommended.

Bread

Stale bread with good sweet butter is the most nutritious and wholesome article of food to be given to a child after they are weaned.
